AI Search Visibility
SEO competes for the click. GEO competes for the answer. Here is what changes when your buyers ask AI instead of searching, and how to tell which problem you have.
The short answer
Search engine optimization (SEO) gets your pages ranked so a buyer clicks through to your site. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) gets your brand named, cited and, ideally, recommended first inside the answer that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity writes.
You still need SEO. AI assistants read the same web, and often the same search indexes, that SEO has spent years making crawlable and credible. What changes is where the decision happens. More and more of the shortlist is built inside the conversation, before anyone visits your site, so your analytics never see the deal you lost.
"Ranking gets you on the list. GEO decides whether AI reads your name out first."

Why it matters now

Side by side
The disciplines overlap. The questions they answer do not.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you compete for | A position in a list of links | A place inside the answer, ideally as the first recommendation |
| Where the buyer decides | On your site, after the click | Often inside the AI conversation, before any click |
| How the buyer asks | Short keywords | Full questions with context, then follow ups that narrow the shortlist |
| The unit you optimise | The page | The brand: how models describe, cite and rank you |
| Who you compete with | Whoever ranks on page one | Whoever the model names alongside you, including review sites and directories |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, technical health | Mentions across the web, credible sources, clear facts the model can quote |
| What you measure | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Mention rate, citations, Win of Visible (WoV) |
| What a win looks like | A visit | Being the brand AI recommends first |
The SomRise Win Ladder
SEO mostly lives on the first rung. GEO is the climb to the fourth. Diagnose from the bottom up: a brand AI cannot read will never be recommended.
01
AI crawlers can fetch and read your key pages. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs may be missed.
02
Models know who you are, what you sell and who you sell to, and describe you correctly.
03
Your pages and third party mentions of you are among the sources AI cites.
04
You are the top pick once you appear. This is what Win of Visible (WoV) measures.
Measurement
SEO has mature measures: rankings, impressions, clicks. GEO needs its own. SomRise tracks three:
The average enterprise brand scores 38% on the SomRise AI Visibility framework across 11 AI model families. Most do not know there is a gap until it is measured. How Win of Visible works →

FAQ
SEO works to rank your pages in search results so people click through to your site. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) works to get your brand included, cited and recommended inside the answers AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity write. SEO competes for the click. GEO competes for the answer.
No. AI assistants draw on search indexes and on the same pages SEO already makes crawlable and credible. Strong SEO is the foundation GEO builds on. What changes is what you measure and where your brand needs to appear.
Start with mention rate, the share of relevant AI answers that name your brand at all. Then track citations, the sources AI links to, and Win of Visible (WoV), the share of answers where your brand appears and is recommended first. Rankings and clicks remain the SEO measures.
The terms overlap. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are both used for work that earns a place inside AI written answers rather than a position in a list of links. SomRise uses AI Visibility as the umbrella term.
